Despite the rising instability and acts of terror in the sub-region, a former United States Foreign Service Officer, John Graham holds the view Ghana should not be too worried with the threat of terror attacks because its security apparatus is well-placed to deal with any threat.

In the past few months, Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Nigeria, which contends regularly with terror group Boko Haram, have suffered major acts of terror giving Ghanaians good cause to worry.

But in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Graham stated that Ghana is better placed than most countries in West Africa to handle the threat of terrorist activity.

“Ghana, I will say, is pretty well placed, better than most in West Africa. I know your intelligence and security force are on the job.”

The former Foreign Service Officer instead said Ghana should be more wary of internal threats to national security.

“But you have to be aware of the threats to violence from within Ghana… There’s tribal tensions, there is some tension between Muslims and Christians in Ghana. It is really important for Ghanaians not to be too distracted about what happened in Cote D’Ivoire saying its going to happen in Accra. I don’t think it will but it could.”

He further advised that Ghana instead focus on ensuring peace within the country saying, “I would hope that the county would also focus on peace building and peacemaking within the country itself.”
