Management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Monday\u00a0re-opened three surgical units to the public after about two months of closure. The three units; Neurosurgery, Urology and the General surgery were closed on February 8 for renovation.<\/p>\n
However, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) remains closed.<\/p>\n
Citi News<\/strong>\u2019 checks at the facility saw several\u00a0patients in long queues at the Out Patient Department (OPD) waiting to be attended to. Some of them who had booked appointments were relieved they can now access healthcare.<\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”2SOuyWuhGknW5mwDcQVLE2J5F99zihmM”]But some patients who travelled long distances to be admitted into the Intensive ICU unit, were left stranded and disappointed as the unit is still undergoing some renovation works.<\/p>\n A doctor who spoke to Citi News\u00a0<\/strong>on condition of anonymity, said the situation is mounting pressure on them because some media reports \u00a0had suggested that the ICU had been re-opened together with the three other units.<\/p>\n \u201cYes; the other units have been re-opened but the ICU remains closed. People have already started coming in because management lied to the media. We had to turn them away because we cannot offer that help. Do you know what it takes for a patient to be flown from Tamale only to reach here and be told that the place has still not been opened? That is how serious it is. It\u2019s a serious public deceit,”\u00a0one doctor lamented.<\/p>\n The ICU has been closed for the past two years. This has led to loss of lives as patients have been made to look elsewhere for help.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is not the first people have come to this place. We treat very serious cases like brain and spinal surgeries here and sometimes when they come and they don\u2019t get to be attended to, some even die. We\u2019ve already had some patients who needed a ventilator and were told that the place is still not operating so you can imagine.Work is still ongoing there and we\u2019ve been told that some of the equipment have been imported and are at the port so how can such a place be opened\u201d he quizzed.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mustapha Salifu, said additional consumables have been provided at the theatres of the surgical block.
