Ranking Member on Parliament’s Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development is threatening to drag before Parliament, the Local Government Minister if uncollected rubbish around Accra is not collected by end of this week.

Kwesi Kyeremeh Ameyaw said the sanitation situation in Accra is unbearable and must be managed immediately to prevent outbreak of diseases.

Tonnes of refuse generated by Accra’s residents have not been collected due to the closure of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant.

Some of the refuse collection companies say they will not work until government pays them for work done over the last two years.

Speaking to Citi News, Kwesi Kyeremeh Ameyaw who is also MP for Sunyani East admonished the Local Government Minister to act fast.

“I am very much worried and I think every well meaning Ghanaian should be worried. The situation is a very worrying one and I think that the Ministry of Local government and for that matter, the Minister…should be able to sit down and make sure that the right things are done,” he stated.

Mr Ameyaw noted that Parliament is scheduled to resume next week and the sector Minister will be called before Parliament “to explain to the whole nation, why we are in this mess. He must come and explain why we got to where we are and how he is taking us out of it.”

Currently Accra has no landfill sites.

The only functional landfill site at the moment is the Kpone, in the Tema Metropolis but the officials at the TMA are complaining that the site is under pressure because it now has to accept refuse from Accra.

Residents are blaming government for the decline in the city’s sanitation situation.
