The Electoral Commission (EC) may soon withdraw the licenses of non-functioning political parties ahead of the November 7 general elections.

There are currently about 24 registered political parties on the EC books, but only the CPP, the NDC, the PNC and the NPP have consistently contested in the 4th Republican elections.

Speaking at a Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) round table discussion, the Director of Elections at the EC, Samuel Tettey, revealed his outfit is considering withdrawing the certificates of the defunct parties.

“… We will embark on one more inspection of the parties and then from there the Commission will take a decision to cancel the certificates given to those political parties,” he warned.

“Some of the parties on our list are non-existent and what we did the other time was we gave them the outcome of the inspection of the political parties and some of them were disputing so we gave them the report and we asked them to react but they haven’t done that. The Commission will be taking a look at all these things,” Mr. Tettey added.

He further revealed that EC had received some applications for registration of some political parties but was quick to add that the Commission will strictly adhere to the political parties’ act in licensing these parties.

“We have about three or four applications for registration of a political party and we are strictly going by the political parties’ act because two thirds of the offices in all the districts is strictly being adhered to.”
