The Android app became the fastest Facebook interface to hit the 100 million monthly active users mark.<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-also\">\n<p>While Facebook Lite has been rolled out in over 150 countries, those with the maximum users include Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Philippines. &#8220;Facebook Lite is the fastest growing interface. We will continue to invest heavily to make the product better,&#8221; Vijay Shankar, product manager, Facebook Lite told <em>Mashable<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The lightweight app was launched nine months ago with the aim at providing data-efficient Facebook access to people with older phones and slower connections in emerging markets. It is smaller than 1MB and uses considerably less data than its the full fledged Facebook app. To ensure speed, it did not have videos and or require users to download Facebook Messenger separately.<\/p>\n<p>The app was developed and tweaked with the help of extensive research in India, Facebook&#8217;s second-largest market in the world. For instance, India&#8217;s polyglot population played a role in making the app available in over 56 languages to enable localisation. Facebook also discovered that a strong demand for video and people using both the apps, switching to Lite when they were on a 2G network.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right from building and launching to improvements, our understanding of how the product works in India play a huge role in shaping where the product is today,&#8221; Shankar said.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch, the app has introduced several new multimedia-rich features that take it closer to its flagship app, without compromising on data efficiency. These include more efficient multiple photo uploads, pinch-to-zoom photos and emojis and a shortened start-up time. Most importantly, it began supporting lower-resolution videos last year, providing information on much data each video consumes.<\/p>\n<p>A new forthcoming &#8220;Play Later&#8221; feature will let users download a video in the background and notify them it has finished downloading. &#8220;The goal is not to have all the features of the main app, because then both will merge,&#8221; Shankar says. &#8220;Facebook Lite needs to stay true to its core principles of working on any phone, any network and being data efficient.&#8221; The company has also shared its engineering insights into building Facebook Lite for developers.<\/p>\n<p>After the controversial exit of Facebook&#8217;s Free Basics platform from India on grounds of violating the principles of net neutrality, Facebook Lite could become a major part of the company&#8217;s strategy to expand its user base.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Mashable<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook Lite, the stripped-down version of the social networking app that was launched in 2015, has officially become the fastest growing version of Facebook.
