The New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth activist, Kwame Baffoe, who has filed at a suit at the Supreme Court seeking among others a declaration that the current voters’ register is bloated and cannot be used for the elections this November, has told Citi News that his action is in the larger national interest and not in the interest of any group.

According to him, the move is to prevent what he described as “future chaos” in the country.

The suit by Kwame Baffoe, the Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organizer of the NPP, is challenging the eligibility of the voters’ register which he claims is bloated with names or minors and foreigners.

His action appears to have been inspired by similar claims made by his party which were rejected by the Electoral Commission.

[contextly_sidebar id=”385fa6hL83aoQ3WOJ1rrX5wqVUsieHKY”]But speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, Kwame Baffoe argued that going to court was the best decision because it is in the interest of Ghanaians.

He explained that “I’ve not even consulted the party leadership; I am doing this in my private capacity as a Ghanaian and not as a politician in order to prevent future chaos. I am doing this for the entire nation,” he said.

Kwame Baffoe also in his suit is praying the Supreme Court to compel the Electoral Commission to implement recommendations made by the committee set up to hear arguments for a new voters’ register.

“I want the Supreme Court to declare that the current register is not fit for this year’s election and therefore the committee’s report should be complied with because we used the taxpayers’ money to pay members of the committee. So they have come out with their report and it is incumbent on the EC to comply with the said report so that we can get a credible register for this year’s election,” he said.

He insisted that “my only interest is to get a credible register so that the country will be safe at the end of the day all the political parties will accept the result.”

Asked how he was going to prove his claims of a bloated register, if not based on the NPP’s supposed ‘evidence’ which were questioned and rejected, Mr. Baffoe said when the hearing starts, he will provide the necessary documents to back his case.
