{"id":191968,"date":"2016-02-21T12:30:49","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T12:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=191968"},"modified":"2016-02-21T12:30:49","modified_gmt":"2016-02-21T12:30:49","slug":"kintampo-crash-48-bodies-identified-by-kin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/02\/kintampo-crash-48-bodies-identified-by-kin\/","title":{"rendered":"Kintampo bus crash: 48 bodies identified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">48 victims of the Tamale-Kintampo <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/02\/18\/deadly-kintampo-accident-in-pictures\/\">road accident<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0which occured on Wednesday, February 17, have been identified by their family members at the Kintampo mortuary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A local reporter with Kintampo based Adas FM, Nana Wiafe Akenten, who\u00a0confirmed this\u00a0to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, added that 10 bodies are yet to be identified at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital in the Brong Ahafo Region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;gWK5pYjC0iV6GrG0COgjQTj0CEt38IAu&#8221;]There were a total of 58 bodies from the road crash at the Kintampo mortuary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ghana\u2019s worst road accident in years <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Kintampo crash will go on record as one of the country\u2019s highest casualty road crashes in the last few years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the last count, the official death toll from the road crash stood at 61, with 25 survivors reported to be in critical condition according to the police service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bus driver likely \u2018guilty\u2019 of reckless overtaking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to police, initial investigations suggest that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking in a sharp curve by the MMT Bus driver, who&#8217;s also deceased.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That conclusion, they say, stems from the account of the survivors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur initial investigations have revealed that the accident was caused by over speeding driving and it was from the Metro Mass Bus. It was overtaking the vehicle where they met in the same lane and then they had the head-on collision. The Regional Commander and the Inspector General of Police and some officers of the Ghana Police Service have come to the accident scene to ascertain things for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MMT Bus possibly overloaded<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In calculating the numbers in both vehicles, the police also said although investigations have not been concluded, it may not be out of place to suggest that there was overloading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MMT\u2019s acting Public Relations Officer, Bernice Akologo, in an interview with <strong>Citi News<\/strong> however said the bus in question which has a passenger limit of 61 including the driver, left the Kumasi bus terminal with the exact number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is thus unclear how the numbers increased along the way.
