{"id":189833,"date":"2016-02-15T14:31:04","date_gmt":"2016-02-15T14:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=189833"},"modified":"2016-02-15T14:31:04","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T14:31:04","slug":"uw-regional-hospital-staff-on-strike-against-new-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/02\/uw-regional-hospital-staff-on-strike-against-new-director\/","title":{"rendered":"U\/W Regional Hospital staff on strike against new director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Staff of the Upper West Regional Hospital have laid down their tools in protest against the appointment of one Dr. Gandaa, a lecturer at the UDS Medical School, as the Medical Director of the facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to them, Dr. Gandaa refused a posting to the facility in 2006 when he and one Dr. Chris Fofie were deployed to help improve healthcare delivery in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-189844\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/20160215060017.jpg\" alt=\"20160215060017\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of the striking nurses who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0believe Dr. Chris Fofie has worked tirelessly for the facility and should have been given the opportunity to lead the hospital as the Medical Director.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They alleged that Dr. Fofie who applied for the position with the newly appointed Medical Director was denied the position because of his ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-189843\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/20160215060013-2.jpg\" alt=\"20160215060013 (2)\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The aggrieved workers have tied red bands\u00a0at the entrances of all wards of the facility to drum home their demands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some posters on the walls of the Hospital had inscriptions like, &#8220;We have been taken for granted for far too long&#8221;, &#8220;Dr. Gandaa refused us when we needed him most&#8221;, &#8220;Dr. Fofie has done what Napoleon couldn&#8217;t do&#8221;, and &#8220;Dr. Fofie is our life wire&#8221; among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-189845\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/20160215060010.jpg\" alt=\"20160215060010\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reports also indicate that the situation has brought healthcare delivery at the facility to a halt with patients waiting in long queues for care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The management of the Regional Health Directorate has not commented on the issue for now but <strong>Citi News<\/strong> checks indicate they are currently in an emergency meeting with the workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In recent times, there have been agitations over the appointments of hospital managers in public health institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a similar protest at the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/05\/confusion-rocks-ridge-hospital-over-medical-directors-appointment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ridge Hospital<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>in Accra, but the medical director\u00a0in question was maintained\u00a0after a review of his appointment by the Ghana Health Service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Latif Mahama\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff of the Upper West Regional Hospital have laid down their tools in protest against the appointment of one Dr. Gandaa, a lecturer at the UDS Medical School, as the Medical Director of the facility.
