United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has given assurance that \u201cending poverty in all its forms everywhere\u201d will be achieved by 2030. This is goal one of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n
He explained that, the 2030 Agenda, the Addis Ababa Agenda and Paris Agreement on Climate Change is the answer to the needs of all persons worldwide.<\/p>\n
\u201c2015 was a year of historic opportunity. We are the first generation that can end poverty, and the last one that can take steps to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. With the adoption of a new development agenda, sustainable development goals and climate change agreement, we can set the world on course for a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The UN Secretary-General was addressing the on-going 54th Session of the United Nations Commission on Social Development (CSoCD 54) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.<\/p>\n
He argued that though there are fewer wars between countries people all over the world are more insecure saying \u201cinequality remains too high affecting poverty reduction efforts and social cohesion in both developed and developing countries.\u201d<\/p>\n
He intimated that \u201ctoo many people continue to face exclusion and are unable to realize their full potential. Too few economies have attained inclusive and sustainable growth and are unable to promote true social progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Secretary-General therefore indicated that a prosperous economy is not enough requirements to eliminate poverty and promote shared prosperity. He therefore asked that \u201cEconomies must be put at the service of people, through effective integrated social policies.\u201d<\/p>\n
He finally called on the Commission for Social Development to capitalize on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals to ensure that SDGs goals are achieved.<\/p>\n
He said \u201cwe in the UN system stand ready to assist you, the Member States, to achieve the goals you have set. We will continure to work closely with civil society, critical players in giving life to our shared vision.\u201d<\/p>\n
