Pupils and teachers of Amelorkope D\/A in the Central Tongu District of the the Volta Region, can now heave a sigh of relief following the\u00a0construction of new classroom blocks to replace their dilapidated structures.<\/p>\n
The pupils hitherto studied under thatch-roofed sheds in deplorable classroom blocks due to inadequate infrastructure.<\/p>\n
This has contributed to low enrollment, poor academic performance and consequently resulted in\u00a0teachers refusing posting to the school.<\/p>\n
The headteacher, P.K Agormedah, recounted how they were left at the mercy of the weather and how they relied on interventions from the Catholic Church to house some of the pupils in a nearby chapel.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it rains, pupils and teachers would have to close down the school. This was making teaching and learning ineffective in the long run affecting the school\u2019s performance. The Catholic Church also helped in housing our KG pupils in their chapel\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The new three-unit classroom block with offices and sanitation facilities was constructed by Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization with support from the Central Tongu District.<\/p>\n
The organization which has over the years been committed to enhancing teaching and learning in\u00a0Ghana also rehabilitated an existing 3-unit classroom block for the school.<\/p>\n
The Country Director of Pencils of Promise, Freeman Gobah, told citifmonline that over 230 pupils would benefit from the facility.<\/p>\n
He said the project was valued at an estimated cost of GH350, 000.00 and was completed within a period of seven (7) months.<\/p>\n
Bright Dey, Head of Planning and \u00a0Regional ICT Coordinator \u00a0on behalf of the Regional Director of Education, also promised to supply the school with 20 computers to enhance the teaching of ICT.<\/p>\n
