{"id":187864,"date":"2016-02-08T05:50:19","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T05:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=187864"},"modified":"2016-02-08T05:50:19","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T05:50:19","slug":"anglogold-suspends-operations-over-clashes-with-illegal-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/02\/anglogold-suspends-operations-over-clashes-with-illegal-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglogold suspends operations over clashes with illegal miners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) has suspended its\u00a0essential services following clashes between illegal miners and\u00a0some of its staff, leading to the death of one of its top managers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clashes on Saturday led to the death of the company\u2019s Communication Director, John Owusu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;ZExAu3xxey0Uh7TRswOtXgowVK8gkThK&#8221;]The illegal miners overpowered security officers detailed to protect Anglogold\u2019s concessions which had been illegally taken over by the galamsey operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Police in Obuasi are yet to make any arrest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deceased, and other AGA officials, had gone to one of their mining sites taken over by the illegal miners; but violence erupted as\u00a0the miners chased them and hurled stones at them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the staff were fleeing from the scene, the deceased was reportedly\u00a0run over by a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is still unclear if he fell off from his\u00a0vehicle or he was hit and run over by another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, and the Police Commander have been holding\u00a0meetings\u00a0with the management of AGA over the matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The acting Head of Operations at Anglogold, Fred Nsarko, earlier told<strong>\u00a0Citi News<\/strong> the situation was so bad that even the re-enforced security taskforce charged to protect them were left overwhelmed by the illegal miners, who attacked them without provocation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Nsarko also intimated the\u00a0police made no attempt to defend the Anglo Gold workers with their guns or water cannons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, the police explained that the decision not to react was strategic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) has suspended its\u00a0essential services following clashes between illegal miners and\u00a0some of its staff, leading to the death of one of its top managers.
