{"id":187553,"date":"2016-02-06T17:00:53","date_gmt":"2016-02-06T17:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=187553"},"modified":"2016-02-06T17:00:53","modified_gmt":"2016-02-06T17:00:53","slug":"lavender-hill-to-be-closed-in-august-mahama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/02\/lavender-hill-to-be-closed-in-august-mahama\/","title":{"rendered":"Lavender hill to be closed in August &#8211; Mahama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From August this year, the infamous Lavender Hill, which has been a dump site\u00a0for\u00a0untreated human excreta into the sea, will be completely closed down according to President John Mahama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;eA7E60rsMd2Gtp9R3PLnyxwlPWRCVVhj&#8221;]The President made this announcement during a ceremony on Friday, February 5, to distribute some waste treatment machines and equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) \u00a0has over years attempted\u00a0to stop the\u00a0Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) from dumping untreated human excreta into the Korle Lagoon at Lavender Hill, a section of the Korle Gonno community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lavender Hill was the name given to the area due to the pungent smell that emanates from there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EPA has even taken <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/01\/10\/ama-dragged-to-court-again-over-lavender-hill\/\">legal action against the AMA<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to compel them to stop the dumping\u00a0but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mahama explained that the repair works on the Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant located at the Korle Lagoon, will be completed by August which permit\u00a0the shut down of Lavender Hill.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41375\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-41375\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/98838cb77607304031f83d5e96f1e5fa_L.jpg\" alt=\"Exhauster trucks waiting to dump at Lavender Hill in Accra \" width=\"601\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/98838cb77607304031f83d5e96f1e5fa_L.jpg 530w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/98838cb77607304031f83d5e96f1e5fa_L-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhauster trucks waiting to dump at Lavender Hill in Accra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mahama said, \u201cI gave AMA and Zoomlion a deadline to repair the Mudor and put enough liquid waste capacity in order that we don\u2019t put any more liquid waste into the sea.\u00a0I am happy to announce that the deadline I gave them is August this year, and so from August this year, Lavender Hill is going to be closed down and there will be no more dumping of waste into the sea,\u201d the President declared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Mahama also indicated that another liquid waste plant is also being built at Ajin Kotoku to cater for the northern and eastern parts of Accra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further urged Ghanaians to show more commitment to National Sanitation exercises and exhibit a spirit of voluntarism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From August this year, the infamous Lavender Hill, which has been a dump site\u00a0for\u00a0untreated human excreta into the sea, will be completely closed down according to President John Mahama.
