Barely few days after the the MP for Asante Akyem North, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, was accused by the police of inciting a\u00a0recent attack that led to the death of\u00a0a Fulani in the renewed\u00a0communal clashes, the Deputy Minority Spokesperson on Defense and Interior, Major (Rtd)Derek Oduro, has boldly charged\u00a0the people of Agogo to\u00a0defend themselves against the Fulani herdsmen,\u00a0since\u00a0the security forces have failed them.<\/p>\n
The Fulani herdsmen have been consistently accused of engaging in violent crimes against the locals\u00a0in\u00a0the area and other parts of the country where they have settled.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”LZnf0Ih5uMEmaMrvU2zdayhXyznHJnnW”]Three years ago, a Kumasi High Court ordered the Ashanti Regional Security Council to flush out all cattle and Fulani herdsmen in some specific areas of the\u00a0district but that is yet to be enforced.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News<\/strong>, Major Oduro, bemoaned the lack of action the part of the authorities of Agogo and the government arguing\u00a0that they should have declared a\u00a0state of emergency immediately the disturbances resurfaced.<\/p>\n \u201cYou do not need any authority from anywhere as a Regional Commander, as a District Chief Executive, as a Municipal Chief Executive to put into motion this operation \u201ccow leg\u201d once you find out that Fulani herdsmen are there causing havoc to the inhabitants,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n Major Oduro believes the lack of a proper response\u00a0from authorities made\u00a0the people of Agogo feel the need to defend themselves.<\/p>\n He also stated that any action of self-defense by the people of Agogo in this regard will be considered lawful.<\/p>\n \u201cThey now want to defend themselves because they think that the security agencies have failed them and therefore they have to take their security into their hands and defend themselves, they have committed no offense.\u201d<\/p>\n Major Oduro urged authorities to take control of the situation and afford the people of Agogo the protection they are entitled to by the constitution saying, \u201cWe have to move into the situation to show them that they are Ghanaians and the constitution mandates us to provide adequate security for them. They don\u2019t have to even request for it.\u201d<\/p>\n He further supported earlier calls from the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem South\u00a0Constituency, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, to deny the Fulanis in the area services like transport and trade and even suggested these\u00a0measures taken are \u201cmild\u201d.<\/p>\n According to him, the people have to defend themselves at all cost but stated that a\u00a0line must be drawn when it comes to taking human lives.<\/p>\n \u201cIf somebody is attacking you, killing you, you have to defend yourself… we are not saying kill that person; but whatever steps you will do to extricate yourself from the problem is what I am talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want a situation where they say let\u2019s pounce on them and kill them. No. I am against that,\u201d he later added.<\/p>\n Major Oduro is of the view that the people of Agogo simply don\u2019t want the Fulani men around they should be understood in that regard.<\/p>\n \u201cI am not saying they should go and kill them but if they are saying no, we don\u2019t have anything to do with you.
