A Child Right activist, Bright Appiah, has chided the Eastern Regional Education Directorate for closing all schools in the Akuapem Traditional Area in the Eastern Region merely because of the burial of the late Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III.

The final funeral rites of the late King of Akuapem who reigned for 41 years, begun on Monday and will end on Sunday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”wM4ZsOarolbrE6y2cThAcNir8OFKmuLg”]Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Appiah, who is also the Executive Director of the Child Rights International, indicated that the move is an affront to the rights of all pupils in the traditional area.

He argued that education of children should be prioritized at all times irrespective of cultural beliefs amongst others.

“Whatever it is, I think that children should still have access to education irrespective of whatever that is happening and the event should rather provide some protection for children, so that they can go to school and have some good life. So for me, that should rather be the focus but the closure of schools as a result of funeral rites does not speak well. For me I don’t think it should be something that should happen,” he insisted.

The child activist observed that such primitive cultures ought not to affect the education of children in anyway.

“The whole mystery that surrounds the death of a chief I believe is what has informed this particular thing. But we live in a modern society that the rights of children must also be guaranteed especially when it comes to their right to education. So any decision that will be taken with respect to that must have the interest of the children at heart,” Mr. Appiah added.
