The Ghana Health Service has confirmed one case of cerebrospinal meningitis in the Volta Region.<\/p>\n

This is the first case in the region this year.<\/p>\n

[contextly_sidebar id=”Yhs2tEeuFvpObR0cNCdXewrKcmay476v”]This comes in the wake of the outbreak of the pneumococcal and another form of meningitis in the Northern, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Regions, resulting in over thirty deaths.<\/p>\n

The Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Joseph Teye Neurtey who confirmed this to Citi News<\/strong> says his outfit has stepped up surveillance in the Krachi West District, where the case was recorded.<\/p>\n

He revealed that the case was confirmed after \u201c hospitals submitted specimen of some suspected cases of meningitis for testing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c Yesterday we had a confirmation that one of such cases was cerebrospinal meningitis \u2026.We were in touch with the disease control unit in Accra to find out whether we can get some vaccines then we could go into the community and carry out a mini mass immunization for people within the community,” Mr. Neurtey added.<\/p>\n

Cerebro Spinal meningitis\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cerebro Spinal Meningitis is a chronic medical conidtion which causes an inflammation of the membranes of both the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n

The inflammation of the brain and the spinal cord often results in a very serious infection and becomes an often fatal variety of meningitis caused by the meningococcus bacteria.<\/p>\n
