{"id":184279,"date":"2016-01-25T07:18:02","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T07:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=184279"},"modified":"2016-01-25T07:18:02","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T07:18:02","slug":"184279","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/01\/184279\/","title":{"rendered":"Health officials deployed to curtail spread of Meningitis in Ashanti Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health has stepped up monitoring in the Ashanti region to curtail the spread of the deadly pneumococcal meningitis.<\/p>\n<p>The disease killed two people after affecting four, in the Offinso municipality over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;H53vVfe5NARZdLHLN0s1kMigzuu3QAMA&#8221;]This is the latest, after those recorded in the Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether the Ashanti Region cases are directly linked to the outbreak in the Brong Ahafo region.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Health Minister told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> public officials will closely monitor the situation to prevent a further spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo deaths have been recorded in the Ashanti Region. What the public health officials are doing is they are trying to find out whether this is related to the outbreak. There is no need for any panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic health officials from the national level are already there. They left Brong Ahafo and they are in the Ashanti Region as I speak and they are looking at the cases how they came about and whether there is any link.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outbreak started\u00a0last year in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo region and later spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo, and Sene districts in the same region.<\/p>\n<p>Bole in the Northern Region has also recorded some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Over 30 deaths have so far been recorded since the beginning of the outbreak in the Northern and Brong Ahafo Regions.<\/p>\n<p>The disease is caused by the inflammation of the productive membrane covering the brain and the spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p>The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health has stepped up monitoring in the Ashanti region to curtail the spread of the deadly pneumococcal meningitis.
