The Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Kofi Issah, is appealing to some 20 general duty doctors posted to the region to report to work.<\/p>\n
Dr. Issah made this appeal after only five out of 25 doctors posted to the region, comprising four general duty doctors and a dental officer reported before the expiration of their clearance letters on December 31 2015.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Citi News,<\/strong> Dr. Issah expressed worry at the low\u00a0doctor-to-patient ratio which stands at 1 to 43,000 in the region, adding that the services of the doctors are badly needed to augment the current disturbing situation in the region.<\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”Se3GHX6hDcwvFzGvdIT27v3FSS7EANm8″]”Everybody should be worried that out of twenty five medical doctors posted to the Upper East Region,\u00a0 only five of them have reported.”<\/p>\n “I (Dr.Issah) worry for the eventual beneficiaries of the services these doctors will offer, these are the women and children of this region because when you find out the statistics of our medical doctors to patients ratio in the region, it looks bad,” he\u00a0stated further.<\/p>\n “It never helps anybody if everybody concentrates somewhere, you can get all the good statistics but if we don’t get the services of these doctors and other health professionals and we perform poorly, we will just add our poor performance to the national level and the net effect is the whole country will perform poorly,”<\/p>\n “If these people who need the services of doctors are not there, how do doctors justify their existence? Doctors can only justify their existence if we are able to come and provide these services”, Dr. Issah reiterated.<\/p>\n But in a telephone interview with the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira , he said although none of the posted doctors will be paid for no work done, the regional health directorate of the Upper East Region would\u00a0have to continue to lobby for them by assuring them of better accommodation and a comfortable environment to attract them work in the region.<\/p>\n He added that the Ghana Health service is putting in place a mechanism for the attraction of doctors to the northern parts of the country.<\/p>\n “We have engaged the Ghana medical colleges on the need to decentralize specialist training because some doctors posted to the north feel they may lose out on\u00a0such training and so to allay their fears, all district hospitals will become specialist training centres so that the specialists will rather move to coach the newly trained doctors.”<\/p>\n He added that “we are also engaging teaching hospitals on how they train their medical students.
