The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is denying corruption allegations against it by one of its Deputy General Secretaries.

The national executives have been accused of releasing about $400,000 to Unique Insurance Company.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9JQRxUkv1FzzHXTNjQ3cMiI6znvRXCjT”]One of GNAT’s directors in charge of Administration and Labour, Mr. Kwadwo Awotwe Nkansah, said there is massive corruption in the Association.

Responding to the allegations at a press conference held today (Wednesday), the General Secretary of GNAT, Mawunyo Demenya said most of the allegations against the executives are issues that have been dealt with already.

He cited the “I.K. Gyasi Committee of 2005 and the Apanga Committee of Enquiry of 2015 were both set up as a result of allegations of financial malfeasance Mr. Awotwe Nkansah leveled against some top officers of the Association.”

Mr. Demenya argued the shortage in souvenirs was because “the supplier was shortchanged by the Chinese company which made him launch an investigation into the issue at his own cost”.

He therefore challenged their accuser, Mr. Awotwe Nkansah “to provide evidence to support his claim”.

According to Mr. Demenya the association is of the opinion Mr. Awotwe Nkansah is coming out with “unfounded” allegations.

They say his allegations are “a strategy to fight his imminent retirement which is due on 26th March, 2016 and also his unsuccessful bid to become the General Secretary of GNAT”

The Association, finally, assured its members and stakeholders that the robust system of GNAT will continue to prevent the corrupt practices as well as allegations of such activities.

–

By: Magdalene Teiko Larnyoh/citifmonline.com/Ghana

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is denying corruption allegations against it by one of its Deputy General Secretaries.
