The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for the arrest of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for allegedly “fabricating falsehood” about Ghana’s voters’ register.

According to the NDC, the Electoral Commission’s preliminary report on calls for new voters’ register suggests that Dr. Bawumia peddled falsehood that had the potential to destabilize the nation.

Dr. Bawumia made a presentation where he claimed that Ghana’s electoral roll is flawed with names of minors and over 76,000 Togolese.

He also claimed that other African nationals from Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso are also on the roll hence the need for a new one to be compiled before the 2016 general elections but the Electoral Commission rejected the claims describing it as “unconvincing.”

But addressing the press on Wednesday, NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu insisted Bawumia must be arrested and dealt with for deceiving Ghanaians.

“The reason why we are calling for the arrest of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is that, I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve heard people say if you fabricate or falsify public document with the intention of deceiving people, our laws should have a way of dealing with you.

” …They printed fake pink sheets and tendered them in, in the Supreme Court. All that was done, was that the Supreme Court just rejected them. Nothing has happened up till today and they come to deceive the Electoral Commission again by printing fake Togolese register, pick peoples pictures on the register and presented them as Togolese and presented some documentation and writing French on those things and claiming it is Togolese register,” he further explained.

Asiedu Nketia questioned the credibility of Dr. Bawumia, an economist, saying “how can a PhD holder who wants to be a vice president in this country, … sink that low?”

He further called on Parliament to devise a law which would punish persons who fabricate information to deceive the public.

“So if a democracy and there is no remedy to such things then woe betides the whole country. Because anybody can just do photoshopping and present it as the truth, these things were happening on social media…but it should not happen when you are presenting evidence to a constitutional body like the Supreme Court or like the Electoral Commission and you shouldn’t be left the hock just like that. I’m not a lawyer but even if there are no laws, Parliament should be looking into those things and finding remedies
