{"id":178545,"date":"2016-01-02T11:37:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-02T11:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=178545"},"modified":"2016-01-02T11:37:09","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T11:37:09","slug":"obama-to-bypass-us-congress-to-end-epidemic-of-gun-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/01\/obama-to-bypass-us-congress-to-end-epidemic-of-gun-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama to bypass US Congress to end &#8216;epidemic of gun violence&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Barack Obama will meet on Monday with attorney general Loretta Lynch to discuss executive actions he could take to make it harder for \u201ca dangerous few\u201d to get their hands on guns.<\/p>\n<p>Obama said on his weekly radio address that he gets so many letters from parents, teachers and children about the \u201cepidemic of gun violence\u201d that he can\u2019t \u201csit around and do nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gun lobby is loud and well organized in its defense of effortlessly available guns for anyone,\u201d Obama said. \u201cThe rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well organized in our defense of our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obama recently directed staff at the White House to look into potential executive actions, such as expanding background checks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Currently, federally licensed firearms dealers are required to seek background checks on potential firearm purchasers. But advocacy groups say some of the people who sell firearms at gun shows are not federally licensed, increasing the chance of sales to customers prohibited by law from purchasing guns.<\/p>\n<p>A source familiar with the administration\u2019s efforts said Obama is expected to take executive action next week that would set a \u201creasonable threshold\u201d for when sellers have to seek a background check. That person didn\u2019t know whether it would be based on the number of guns sold or revenue generated through gun sales.<\/p>\n<p>The source, a member of a gun control advocacy group, was not authorized to discuss details before the announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity. White House officials won\u2019t confirm the timing.<\/p>\n<p>Obama is in Hawaii for his annual holiday vacation with his family.<\/p>\n<p>The National Rifle Association opposes expanded background check systems. The organization\u2019s Institute for Legislative Action says studies have shown that people sent to state prison because of gun crimes typically get guns through theft, the black market or family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>Also, many purchases by criminals are made from straw purchasers who pass background checks. \u201cNo amount of background checks can stop these criminals,\u201d says the group\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Obama has consistently expressed frustration after mass shootings, saying it shouldn\u2019t be so easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Going into his final year in office, Obama said his New Year\u2019s resolution is tomove forward on unfinished business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s especially true for one piece of unfinished business, that\u2019s our epidemic of gun violence,\u201d Obama said in his weekly address.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>He said a bipartisan bill from three years ago requiring background checks for virtually everyone had huge support, including among a majority of NRA households. But the Senate blocked it.<\/p>\n<p>He said tens of thousands of Americans have since died as a result of gun violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach time, we\u2019re told that commonsense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, so we shouldn\u2019t do anything,\u201d he said. \u201cWe know that we can\u2019t stop every act of violence.
