President John Mahama has in a statement, accepted the resignation of the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor.

The Minister who promised Ghanaians he would resign at the end of 2015, if he failed to solve the 4-year power crisis, did so on Thursday, December 31, 2015 as the crisis still persists.

“President John Dramani Mahama has accepted the resignation of Dr Kwabena Donkor (MP) as Minister of Power,” the two paragraph statement said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0UlLPuABXj5cAnWhRm6SgPVoQiZ4V326″]”The President thanked him for his services as the pioneer Minister for the Ministry of Power which was carved out of the then Ministry of Energy and Petroleum,” the statement added.

The President had warned in February 2015 that he would hold the Minister by his promise to Ghanaians to end the power crisis by the end of 2015.

In his New Year’s message to the country, President Mahama stated emphatically that; “Each and every member of this government will uphold the promises that have been made to you, the people whose interest we serve. Those who fall short of that commitment have been and will continue to be asked to tender their resignation and relieved of their responsibilities.”

Dr Donkor became the second minister to resign in a matter of eight days, in President Mahama’s government.

The Transport Minister Dzifa Atsivor also resigned just about a week ago, following the $3.6 million bus re-branding scandal under her ministry.

Earlier in the week, the Dr Donkor had sought to save himself from the resignation, after a statement from his ministry claimed that load shedding in the country had ended.

However the load shedding committee in a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo said the load shedding was not over.
