{"id":175807,"date":"2015-12-20T08:57:25","date_gmt":"2015-12-20T08:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=175807"},"modified":"2015-12-20T08:57:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-20T08:57:25","slug":"fda-to-prosecute-illegal-cigarette-sellers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/12\/fda-to-prosecute-illegal-cigarette-sellers\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA to prosecute illegal cigarette sellers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Volta Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has seized assorted illegal cigarettes from the Ho Central market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cigarettes were Bond Street International and Bond Street Menthol, Bond Green and Bond Red, Rothmans Royals, Gold Seal Red and Gold Seal Green, Business Royal (Strawberry), Business Royal (Cherry), Business Royal (Green Apple), Empire and Godfrey Philips.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Six women from whom the cigarettes were seized would be prosecuted, Eugene Addo Regional Head, FDA, told the Ghana News Agency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Each of the women would be fined or in default get three years prison sentence or both if found guilty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The women were Mercy Makumator, Mavis Hadzor, Esinu Zegotia, Grace Addo, Edem Hadjie and Joyce Akorlia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Addo said previous seizures and warnings seemed not to deter offenders hence the resort to prosecution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cigarettes bore labels in Ewe and in some foreign languages except English. Sections 58 to 77 of Ghana\u2019s Public Health Act, Act 85 of 2012 on tobacco control, however outlaws such cigarettes, Addo said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A properly labelled cigarette in Ghana must be in English Language warning smokers of the health risks in consuming them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cigarettes must have the inscription \u201cfor sale in Ghana only\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is illegal to smoke cigarette in public places in Ghana except in properly designated places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghana is signatory to the international convention on Tobacco control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Benedicta Akpene Ansah, Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Second-in-Command, Ho Municipal Police, assured the FDA of the cooperation of the Police in safeguarding public health.<br \/>\n&#8211;<br \/>\nBy: GNA<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Volta Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has seized assorted illegal cigarettes from the Ho Central market.
