{"id":175521,"date":"2015-12-19T06:49:04","date_gmt":"2015-12-19T06:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=175521"},"modified":"2015-12-19T07:43:00","modified_gmt":"2015-12-19T07:43:00","slug":"bird-flu-outbreak-chicken-safe-for-christmas-agric-ministry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/12\/bird-flu-outbreak-chicken-safe-for-christmas-agric-ministry\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu outbreak: Chicken safe for christmas &#8211; Agric Ministry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ministry of Agriculture has sought to calm Ghanaians following growing concerns over the safety of chicken ahead of the yuletide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The recent outbreak of bird flu in Accra and Tema triggered fears among consumers who are unsure about buying chicken for\u00a0the Christmas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;k9PkKaDwbR7GEkRPePjIK5izLuFalk6s&#8221;]Chicken is a mainstay of Ghanaian meals especially around the Christmas period when chicken sales on the market place normally shoot up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Deputy Minister of Agriculture in charge of livestock, Dr Hannah Bissiw, has\u00a0told\u00a0<strong>Citi News\u00a0<\/strong>the recent outbreaks on a few farms in Accra and Tema have been curtailed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Bissiw, a veterinary doctor by training, says even though there is a restriction on the movement of poultry and poultry products, the birds being sold on the markets are safe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere is no cause for alarm at all. People can freely go to the market and purchase their birds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to her, no bird will even survive an infection of the bird flu long enough to make it to the market place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not even going to get a single bed alive or any bird that will survive for it to find itself on the market&#8230; If the virus hits your farm, if you have 100, 000 birds, you\u2019re going to lose them in a matter of two days.\u00a0All these birds are healthy to consume,\u201d she assured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her assurances have translated well onto the market place as the sale of poultry doesn\u2019t appear to have been affected by the bird flu scare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u2019 Farida Shaibu whho visited the Accra Central Business District reported that the demand for poultry ahead of the yuletide remains high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Traders in poultry told her\u00a0they take precautions against the bird flu scare by only buying live health birds from farmers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen we go to poultry farms, we normally check so we don\u2019t buy birds that are sick,\u201d one trader noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The traders added that there is a high\u00a0demand for poultry products with peak sales recorded\u00a0during\u00a0the weekends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some say on a good business day, they are able to sell between 300 and 400 fowls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One optimistic trader said \u201cWe are expecting the farmers to supply more so we can also get more and supply to our consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Agriculture has sought to calm Ghanaians following growing concerns over the safety of chicken ahead of the yuletide.
