The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is demanding an urgent meeting with the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) over recent price hikes in utility tariff.

The labor union is on record to have condemned the increases and called for an immediate review downwards of the hikes in utility tariffs.

[contextly_sidebar id=”IoXyEw2WuAF2UmUOLh3Y4xq249x1cF3S”]TUC in a statement also called for the date of implementation to be changed from December 14, 2015 to sometime next year 2016 citing general economic hardships in the country.

Speaking to Citi News on the way forward, Deputy Secretary General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah demanded an immediate meeting with the PURC so issues are ironed out.

He said they held series of meetings with the PURC when there were rumours spread that power producers were demanding a 200 percent increment in prices while that of water was expected to go up by 400 percent.

He noted that “I can tell you that, that is why we did not get the 400% for water and over 200% for electricity and we are now talking about 59% which really means that we really are almost hitting the target. So we will continue to dialogue.”

“If we can dialogue in a nice environment, why should we jump unto a fray. We think PURC has created the space for us and we want to use it. By law, they are supposed to listen to everybody and PURC is open now, they are willing to listen to everyone,” Dr. Baah added.
