The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has taken immediate steps to ensure effective verification of all its subscribers through the ongoing biometric registration exercise.<\/p>\n
This evidenced based exercise forms part of moves to satisfy the health needs of all subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).<\/p>\n
The biometric registration exercise which is been piloted started in the Greater Accra, Central and Eastern Regions.<\/p>\n
At a media briefing in Accra on Thursday April 8, 2014, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations at the NHIA, Nathaniel Otoo disclosed that about 32,000 identification cards have so far been printed.<\/p>\n
He said plans were afoot to partner with Non-Governmental Organizations and Community Based Organizations to migrate all NHIS subscribers onto the digital data system.<\/p>\n
Nathaniel Otoo also disclosed that all NHIS identification cards will be synchronized.<\/p>\n
On allegations of corruption, he said the NHIA will not spare corrupt officials caught in fraudulent deals.<\/p>\n
Director of Management Information Systems at the NHIA, Perry Nelson outlined delays in production of identification cards to beneficiaries and ineffective health provider authentication as some of the challenges which needed immediate attention.<\/p>\n
He anticipated that the biometric registration exercise will improve the NHIA\u2019s health financing regime.<\/p>\n
Available records showed that the NHIA at the end of 2013 recorded 9.8 million active members.<\/p>\n
Also, the NHIA recorded 27 million hospital attendances each year for which reason the necessary measures will be put in place to optimize the capacity.<\/p>\n
