The Minister for Trade and Industry, Haruna Iddrisu has inaugurated technical and supervisory consultative committees to develop the Shea butter industry in Tamale.<\/p>\n
He implored the members to be optimal in the use of resources by being transparent and hold the implementing institutions accountable for the funds that will be entrusted in their care.<\/p>\n
He described the project as a project aimed at alleviating poverty saying, \u201cthis is a presidential support initiative for the development of Shea nut to support the northern economies i.e. the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions; particularly to build the capacity of women, training them to ameliorate poverty through the support for this major cash crop; the Shea tree. I have no hesitation describing it as the cocoa of the north and it deserves special attention.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that setting up the committees is proof of the government\u2019s desire to make Shea nut a cash crop as it has the potential to create jobs, reduce poverty and create wealth for the people in the North Savanna zone and parts of the Brong Ahafo and Volta regions.<\/p>\n
Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that an initial amount of GHC 5 million will be provided over a two-year period to boost the Shea nut industry in the three northern regions.<\/p>\n
1 million Shea tree seedlings will also be added to the existing Shea plantations in the area during the first year of the project.<\/p>\n
He added that the project will also include the construction of 12 Shea nut processing center; whereas 1,000 women will be equipped with skills in Shea nut production and processing in the targeted areas.<\/p>\n
The two committees under the chairmanship of the Buipewura Mahama Jinapor II and the Chief Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Maurice Tango Abisa Seidu have been charged to provide technical, social and monitoring support to implement programmes which will ensure the revamping of the Shea nut industry.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, A.B.A Fusein on his part, commended government for making a conscious effort to enhance the cultivation of Shea nut.<\/p>\n
He lamented that although the area had suffered from bad press, the area was peaceful, hospitable and conducive environment for investment.<\/p>\n
He then pledged the Northern Regional Coordinating Council\u2019s (NRCC) readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to bring sustainable development to the area.<\/p>\n
Mr. Seidu on behalf of the committees promised to initiate, implement and supervise the projects to ensure its success.<\/p>\n
He said feasibility studies and technical plan will be followed to ensure the project is beneficial to bridge the gap between the north and south.<\/p>\n
The project will be executed by Savanna Plantations in collaboration with other stakeholders.<\/p>\n
