Some workers of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) who picketed at the Ministry of Finance on Monday have appealed to government not to punish them for protesting.

They argue that the demonstration was not aimed at causing mayhem but to press home their demands for their salary arrears to be paid.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dwKhhzTKMeFsvTZ7BA2QyosFNiY4SMiB”]Some workers to NADMO thronged the premises of the Finance Ministry on Monday to demand the payment of their salaries which they say has not been paid since 2013.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on condition of anonymity, one of the NADMO workers apologized for their actions, explaining that they went to the Ministry to only clarify issues with the officer in charge of clearance.

“I will like to apologize to the Ministry of Finance, Management of NADMO, Officer in-charge of the Ministry’s Police station for the inconvenience that we caused. Our intention was not to cause mayhem or violence, we went there to clarify an issue with Mr. Adjololo, the officer in charge of clearance,” he stated.

“Unfortunately, we met the Police officers saying that they’ve had the notice that people are coming there to cause mayhem. We were not there to cause any problem,” he stressed.

He further revealed that they went to the Ministry to inquire whether their allowances had been captured since government had reiterated that it will not use its resources to tackle on issues that had not been budgeted for.

“We were there to check whether we’ve been cleared because we are much aware that this month, the Finance Ministry will be presenting the budget to Parliament and we want to know if we’ve been cleared and if we’ve not been cleared, what’s the way forward? Because the president has reiterated that he is not going to pay for anything that is not in the scope of the budget,” he clarified.
