For one who was “rejected” when she turned up for Miss Malaika auditions in 2012, it must have been a pleasant surprise when Naa Ashorkor, host of the grand finals of Miss Malaika 2015 announced last Saturday night, “Miss Malaika 2015 is Kukua”.

It certainly must have been a long road for 22 year old Kukua Korsah, a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to own the bragging rights of a Malaika queen. The confident young lady beat her nine competitors to be crowned this year’s Miss Malaika at the National Theatre last Saturday.

She summed up her successful story in her earlier “Believe in Yourself” presentation which caught on well with patrons who applauded her for the good delivery.

For her prize, Kukua drove home a brand new KIA Rio car, cash, a scholarship and the enviable Miss Malaika Ghana crown.

The second position was grabbed by Martha Daniels, 18, and Naana Antwiwaa Nuamah, 21, of KNUST came third.

The evening’s tone was set with KIDI, winner of MTN Hitmaker 4 heralding the delegates on stage. Sporting red outfits, the 10 contestants – Kumang, Kuukua, Karen, Antwiwaa, Soraya, Selinam, Beverly, AJ, Donna and Martha took turns to officially introduce themselves to the patrons.

The first stage seemed to be the platform for the young ladies to test their popularity in the auditorium. If that was the criteria for selecting a queen on the night, then Beverly and Selinam would have won hands down as the constant chanting of their names echoed the auditorium.

The real test began at the second stage when the contestants answered varied questions from social media fanatics and that was when Kukua proved she has got the brains to be a Malaika queen.

Her constant display of intelligence and the confidence she exhumed anytime she stepped on stage no doubt won her new admirers on the night. It was, therefore, not surprising that her talent act on “Exposing corruption” earned her a spot in the best three talent acts on the night.

The number was watered down to five after the second round and the unlucky five of Karen, Soraya, Donna, AJ and Beverly had to exit the competition.

The “survivors”, Kumang, Kuukua, Antwiwaa, Selinam and Martha battled it out during the “question and answer” segment from the Judges- John Dumelo, Victoria Micheals, Gwan Gyimah, Nathaniel Attoh and Mrs. Theresa Ayoade.

There were special prizes for some of the contestants who had emerged tops at the various tasks. Kumang Lugu-Zuri took home Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic and Antwiwaa grabbed the Best Talent Act prize.

As expected, the Miss Malaika grand finale was not just about the young ladies but one of great fun and excitement as KIDI, MzVee, Stonebwoy and Eazzy took turns to thrill the audience with exhilarating performances.

MzVee was spectacular on stage as she got the audience to dance and sing along to some of her well known songs such as Borkorborkor, Harmattan, Come Over, and Natural Girl among others.

He is the hottest artiste now and Stonebwoy was in his best form last Saturday when he took the audience through songs like Not Again, Pull Up, Baafira and Go Higher.

Though her songs, Ginger, Burning Love and Kpakpo Shito were not popular among the patrons, Eazzy was spectacular on stage with her dance moves.

Her choreography with her dancers was a “thumbs up” for Eazzy who hasn’t had a rosy career for some time now.

The crowning of Kukua as the 13th Malalika queen brought the curtains down on an exciting journey which started in August this year at the Crown Apartmento Hotel in Airport where 20 wannabes were selected at the audition.

But for the late start and a few technical problems that the production team handled well, the finals of this year’s Miss Malaika, was another successful event organised by Charterhouse and Gh One TV.
