The Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, has assured that her outfit will take a decision in the\u00a0best\u00a0interest of the country over calls for a new voters’ register.<\/p>\n

She was speaking at the opening of a two-day forum on whether or not the EC should compile a new voters\u2019 register for the 2016 general elections.<\/p>\n

[contextly_sidebar id=”oHSNlmf9ykewxA7HzweZwj2i6PzPklBy”]The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is spearheading the demand for a new voters’ register for the country.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Osei said \u201cwe have taken note of the concerns raised in the media by some stakeholders, especially the supporters of the big political parties about the neutrality of some members of the panel.\u00a0It is however important to reiterate that the panel is here to listen and engage all stakeholders and help us arrive at a consensus and make recommendations to the EC.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that after the two day forum \u201cif the panel feels it is necessary, then it will engage the parties and the stakeholders who have made submissions on a personal basis or together.\u00a0 The findings and recommendations of the panel will be presented to the commission for a final decision which will be communicated to the public in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs to whether or not we will have a new register or whether we will be adopting some of the audit proposals we\u2019ve received, that decision will be taken by the Electoral Commission in line with and on the authority of our constitutional mandate,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
