A Professor of History, Irene Korkoi Odotei has cited the lack of an ‘inter-generational dialogue’ as the cause for the tensions between the elderly and the youth in Ghanaian society.

While admitting that the older generation should bear responsibility for some current challenges, she admits the status quo will be corrected if efforts are made to bridge the communication gap.

Professor Irene Odotei was speaking on the Time with Legends segment on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday.

“I do not believe the world has gone so bad, I believe things have changed…we have to take our responsibility for what we have done to produce what we have now. I believe that we missed it in the inter-generational dialogue, we are not talking to each other. We are just giving them orders…the older want the youth to behave like them, likewise the youth…once we are able to have the inter-generational dialogue and appreciate and affirm each other, we can have the youth do things. The youth are brilliant and I admire them for that,” she said.

She also expressed worry over the inability of successive leaders to ensure that the nation’s wealth and resources are distributed for everyone to benefit.

“We do not need a room full of gold before we can share, even if we have a bucket full of gold we should be able to share…but it has to start from the heart then to the head, after which it will command the limbs to move then we have results. But if the heart does not feel anything for the other person, then we are in trouble,” Professor Odotei observed.
