country has launched a PET plastic recycling project to help reduce the amount of scattered plastic waste in the environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project which is done in collaboration with an NGO, Environment 360, was piloted in James Town, one of Accra\u2019s fishing communities, where the project collected plastic waste bottles, processed it and exported it to be recycled into other materials to be used for polyester among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Voltic-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-162573 size-full\" 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at the official launch of the project at Cantonment in Accra, the Managing Director of Voltic Ghana, Philip Redman, said \u201cWe are a large contributor to plastic waste in the country, hence we want to use this medium [Evolve Community PET recycling Project] to cut down on the amount of waste in the environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project was piloted to measure the feasibility of a community PET waste collection scheme as well as testing the viability of a larger scale project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Voltic-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-162571 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Philip Redman further indicated that, since there is currently no recycling plant in the country capable of recycling PET waste, the company looks forward to a future where this can be done locally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project collects, cleans and exports the plastic bottles to be recycled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also speaking at the launch, the Executive Director of Environment360, indicated that, 8% of an estimated 13,000 tons of waste produced daily in Ghana is 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to her, the Evolve Community PET Recycling project is the result of a \u201ccommunity request\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She added that, \u201cEvolve does not only help directly reduce the amount of plastic pollution in Ghana, but also helps to set the parameter for potential community collection schemes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo far, about 100 individuals have bought the bags and registered for the programme with 50 kilogrammes of plastic bottles collected providing a reliable baseline data for the amount of plastic waste generated in private residences\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has lauded the programme and said it provides a model upon which many of such environmental projects would be built.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ministry stated that \u201cthe small scale recycling sector will help provide employment; reduce the material from straying to drains to create problems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a
