A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has described the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko as a “coup d’état.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”qrKpagYlTKRzLoEWT8mlTNLP65wwXqZB”]He questioned the timing of the suspension and argued that because the party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo is abroad, “I would have thought that such a momentous decision should have been taken in his presence.”

“I’ve described the whole action to tantamount to a coup d’état,” he added.

The NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Friday unanimously voted to suspend Paul Afoko indefinitely following a decision by the party’s Disciplinary Committee which decided that Mr Afoko be suspended.

The Disciplinary Committee took the decision first, after the National Council of Elders in September, wrote to it, demanding amongst others, that the National Chairman Paul Afoko, be made to step aside until after the 2016 elections.

But speaking on Eyewitness News, the suspended NPP stalwart, Dr. Wereko-Brobby said the development will affect the fortunes of the party.

“There must be a credible opposition which will give Ghanaians the chance, if they think president Mahama has failed, to vote the opposition into power. I don’t think the actions of the NPP and others is helping things at all. It’s rather unfortunate., “ he added.
