{"id":161317,"date":"2015-10-21T16:28:59","date_gmt":"2015-10-21T16:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=161317"},"modified":"2015-10-21T16:28:59","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T16:28:59","slug":"families-of-freed-npp-activists-welcome-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/10\/families-of-freed-npp-activists-welcome-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Families of freed NPP activists welcome decision\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The families of five youth activists of the New Patriotic Party in Tamale who were jailed for various offences have welcomed news of <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/10\/21\/court-frees-5-npp-activists-over-ndc-mans-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\">their release from prison<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yahuza Yakubu, Majeed Alhassan, Habib Mohammed Dagbana, Shaibu Alhassan and Moro Gundaana were jailed over the murder of Alhassan Rashid, an NDC youth activist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;rXFDRPQy6dMTn4vnwQ4IubGpZ0fHfwhY&#8221;]For security reasons, they shuttled between the Tamale and Navrongo Prisons and finally jailed by a Tamale High Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A seven member jury presided over by Justice Lawrence Mensah took the decision and Yahuza Yakubu was to be hanged to death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to murder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rest, Majeed Alhassan, Alhassan Sayibu, Habib Mohammed Dagbana and Imoro Gundaana were to serve 36 years in prison for conspiracy to murder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their arrest according to the NPP was politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Concerned Elephants Youth Association and several other NPP groups organized series of news conferences in protest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen and Lawyer Shaibu Alhassan filed an appeal to overturn the case which was transferred to Kumasi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They were arrested on 17 January 2009 following a political clash between NPP and NDC youth in Tamale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clash led to the burning of several houses, vehicles and motorbikes including state properties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gumbihini, Choggu and other surrounding communities in the Tamale metropolis were the worst affected areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Abdul Karim Naatogmah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The families of five youth activists of the New Patriotic Party in Tamale who were jailed for various offences have welcomed news of their release from prison.
