{"id":160898,"date":"2015-10-20T16:30:50","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T16:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=160898"},"modified":"2015-10-20T15:56:45","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T15:56:45","slug":"ec-meets-political-parties-others-over-new-voters-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/10\/ec-meets-political-parties-others-over-new-voters-register\/","title":{"rendered":"EC meets political parties, others over new voters\u2019 register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Electoral Com\u00admission (EC) is set to meet the various political parties and key stakeholders next week over the need for a new voter\u2019s register.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The meeting follows the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/09\/22\/6-parties-submit-proposals-for-new-voters-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">submission of positions<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of political parties and other groups articulating their views on the issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;NXddkjwq0E2VtT9vh6j1WOwy9eRdJDWy&#8221;]The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/18\/about-80000-togolese-are-in-ghanas-voters-register-bawumia\/\" target=\"_blank\">new and credible electoral roll<\/a><\/strong><\/span> for the 2016 general elections. They have questioned the credibility of the current register which they claim contains names of some foreigners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Organizer of the People&#8217;s National Convention(PNC), Emmanuel Wilson who affirmed the party\u2019s support for the EC however told\u00a0<strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0that the party is awaiting an official invitation from the EC,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTo the best of my knowledge, we have not received any letter from the Electoral Commission and so we are hoping that we should get the invitation to join in the discussions, the EC has always communicated to us through a formal letter.\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile the General Secretary of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, has described the EC&#8217;s decision to consider proposals as a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe will make our case forcefully and that if the EC wants to consider the compilation of a new voter\u2019s register, it can only do so when we have a national identification in place otherwise the problems that are being debated now can never be solved with by just opening the register again,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">About 15 political parties and over 30 groups have submitted propos\u00adals on the matter. The meeting which is expected to be held by the end of the month, will allow the political parties defend their respective positions while being questioned on the basis of\u00a0 their arguments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a related development, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/10\/20\/ndc-snubs-iea-debate-on-voters-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">boycotted<\/a><\/span><\/strong> a debate on the country&#8217;s voters&#8217; register organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
