Legal Aid Scheme workers in the Northern Region are threatening to lay down their tools if government does not increase their salaries.

The lawyers who are also calling for a review of their conditions of service are also accusing government of ignoring petitions they sent to them over the last three years.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NQwQdZlHT13onEzkVROrWdLN8OBQB8yX”]Speaking to Citi News, the Northern Regional Director for the Legal Aid scheme, Issah Mahmud said the government has until the end of this month to address their concerns.

He explained that the introduction of the single spine salary structure has not been helpful to them.

“Before single spine was introduced, I used to earn GH¢1,500 monthly, now with the introduction of the single spine, my salary has been reduced to GH¢1,300.”

Mr. Mahmud said several appeals to the sector ministry to have the issue addressed have proved futile.

“We’ve been struggling with government, ministry of finance and fair wages over the years for them to rationalize our salaries so that we could be at par with other colleagues in other departments. We indicated that if the condition does not change and if attention is not paid to us, we will lay down our tools and we were not going to serve anybody any notice any longer.”

The Legal Aides have given government till the end of October to address their issue or face their wrath.

“So we are saying that beyond October if things do not change then the good people of Ghana will not blame us because we have been patient for well over three years,” he added.
