{"id":158106,"date":"2015-10-08T10:52:53","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T10:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=158106"},"modified":"2015-10-08T11:46:39","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T11:46:39","slug":"accra-psychiatric-hospital-justifies-new-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/10\/accra-psychiatric-hospital-justifies-new-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Accra Psychiatric hospital justifies new charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chairman of the Mental Health Board and chief psychiatrist at the Accra Psychiatric hospital, Dr Akwasi Osei has defended the hospital&#8217;s decision to review its charges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hospital on Wednesday, reviewed upwards, the charges for the various services offered to the general public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision, according to management is to \u201cenable the hospital meet the high cost of essential non-medicine consumables needed for the provision of uninterrupted care to patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;B8DJhY8yCmDvYkUePuKVEtZy3NyXTMI7&#8243;]A statement issued to announce the new service charges also added that, \u201c the fees are only to supplement the funding by the central government towards the provision of mental health care as such they do not represent the full cost of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chief Psychiatrist, Dr Akwasi Osei in an interview with <strong>Citi News<\/strong> justified the decision which he said was taken in consultation with the mental health board after several unsuccessful attempts to get the Ministry of Health to support the various mental hospitals in the country with funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is really a desperate approach. We are hoping that things will change because the ministry has neglected us. We may have to do this or we will have to close down and discharge all patients. That will not be the best,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Previously, some services that used to be free are now going for as much as 500 Ghana cedis. For instance, admission of new patients which used to be free will now cost 550 Ghana cedis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, the patient folder and ID for new cases have been increased from GH\u00a225 to GH\u00a240.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Citi news\u2019<\/strong> checks at the hospital revealed that most patients were unaware of the new charges. Hence, those who failed to make payments were turned away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A mother of one of the patients who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> said \u201cI was transferred from Dzorwulu to the hospital but I was surprised to notice that the charges have increased dramatically. I had only 70 cedis on me and had no option than to pay. As I speak to you, I may have to walk back home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACCRA-PSYCHO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-158109 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACCRA-PSYCHO.jpg\" alt=\"ACCRA PSYCHO\" width=\"684\" height=\"937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACCRA-PSYCHO.jpg 684w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ACCRA-PSYCHO-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Nursing at the Psychiatry, Emmanuel Kpappoe decried the situation where the facility has had to incur all charges on its own. He added that the only means to feed the patients at certain times was to get funding from donors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A rather worried Mr. Kpappoe also told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that the health ministry has over the years neglected the facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is very sad when you look at the conditions of the mental hospital. We have complained several times but the ministry keeps assuring us and yet nothing is done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI think they are more concerned about the general hospitals than us.
