The Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the nation’s second largest referral facility, has launched a Foundation to provide lifeline to babies born to poor parents.

Dr. Gyikua Plange-Rhule, Head of the Unit, said at its official launch that it would fund the medical bills of those aged between one-day and two months.

She described as deeply troubling, seeing babies endure so much pain and even die, all because their family had no money.

The health personnel at the Unit had through voluntary contributions raised GHȼ1,000 to serve as seed money and invited the public to support.

Dr. Plange-Rhule said there had been many instances where they had footed the bills of less-privileged babies – paid for laboratory investigations, X-ray and ultra-sound scan.

She pointed out that every child had a God-given potential and had the right to life and said their health must therefore receive priority attention of the society.

She appealed to individuals and organizations to identify with the noble cause of saving lives by donating to the Foundation.

The step taken by the Unit has received tremendous applause especially by mothers and seen as an intervention that could drastically reduce the child mortality rate.
