She was only 19 when she started dating a 30-year-old military officer.

The relationship was a lovely one to behold.

Abena was constantly showered with gifts and her lover was always at her beck and call.

Then the unfortunate happened. Abena started feeling feverish and throwing up early in the morning. Your guess is as good as mine; she was pregnant.

Abena’s headache was how to relay the news to her parents and especially her dad who was a strict military officer.

It has not been easy for the young girl who had to talk her lover boy into taking responsibility.

He initially denied responsibility for the pregnancy until he was coerced into fathering the baby and even after being compelled to take care of the baby, Abena says the military officer performs his fatherhood role grudgingly.

Abena, who is an SHS graduate spent the early stages of her life with her grandmother until she later joined her parents. She is an eldest of four children.

She was getting ready to write private exams[ NOVDEC] to gain entry into the University when she got pregnant.

“My menses didn’t come for two months and I told my mum and when I told her she asked if I did something with someone and I told her no and she was like if I had not done anything with somebody it will be proven but I later realised I was feeling sick and I left the house.”

How she met the Military Officer

Sharing how he met the father of her baby, she disclosed that she was walking from class to the bus stop one day when he met the military officer [father of the baby] who offered her a lift to her destination but suddenly diverted the route.

“I closed from class one day and I was on my way going home but my school is far away from the bus stop so sometimes when you are walking on the road someone will offer you a lift so he stopped the car and I thought he wanted to take me to my destination but he changed the route all of a sudden so I told him I would not go and he told me not to behave like a kid because I am a big girl. We did not however go to his house.”

“He started asking me about my name and asked if I could be his girlfriend and I told him ‘you cannot meet someone today and ask if she can be your girlfriend”

The Military officer after interacting with Abena for sometime took her number.

That was the beginning of a relationship that did not turn out well.

They began holding long conversations on the phone and building the friendship until he later told Abena he loved her.

“I spoke to my friend about the guy’s intentions who advised me to give the man a chance if I feel he is a good man and see what comes up but my mum warned me never to go to his house because most of these officers take advantage of young girls and sleep around with them,”Abena recalled.

The young lady who had fallen head over heels in love with the guy however refused to heed to the advice of her mum and entered a relationship with the guy though she had known him for just a month.

Abena said her then boyfriend attempted having sexual intercourse with her upon her first visit but she vehemently rejected it.

“The first day he returned from one of his trips he asked me to visit him so I consulted my friend who asked me to go. I told my mum and she advised me not to go to his house but my friend kept insisting the guy will not do anything harmful to me so I visited him and when I did, he tried sleeping with me but I objected so he felt bad.

“I visited the guy with another female friend but she left us and went out with another friend of the guy. I told her to stay but insisted she will leave me with the guy for us to have our privacy.”

Abena resolved to break up with her boyfriend after she realised he wanted to sleep with her but her friend kept influencing her to stay in the relationship after the guy apologised.

She later gave in and had sex with her boyfriend after incessant pressure from the latter.

“He invited me over again and that day he was begging me to sleep with him. He begged me for a very long time so I was also feeling bad and I was like ‘why should my boyfriend be begging me for sex?’ so I decided to give in”

Asked why she never used contraceptives, she said “I am not used to those things and I believed in the relationship. It never crossed my mind I will be pregnant.”

Aftermath

Abena recounts that her boyfriend stopped communicating with her and left for Congo after having sexual intercourse with her.

She said though the father of the baby was initially supporting her with 500 ghana cedis every month, “he has halved it this month.”

“He has not yet given me any explanation for giving that amount of money. I don’t know his mind as of now. I don’t know if he still wants the baby,” she complained.

Abena says she has learnt so many lessons from her ordeal and her new dream is to pursue her education and become influential in society.
