The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is advising the country’s Electoral Commission (EC) not to succumb to political pressure to hastily compile a new voter’s register ahead of the 2016 election.

[contextly_sidebar id=”g4HMpbIQLN2jGYcSjnSFtC8mbs7WsWiH”]The GBA maintains that the EC should come out with solutions and ideas that will help strengthen the country’s democracy.

The GBA made the call in a resolution adapted by its members after the Bar conference in Kumasi.

“The GBA lauds the approach by the electoral commission and its effort at resolving the impasse concerning the controversy arising over the integrity over the national voters register.”

“The Bar however cautions against any hasty, poorly informed and premature decisions of the electoral commission that could compromise the search for an enduring solution that could advance national interest and further affirms that the trust worthy voters register and effective monitoring of electoral activities underlie public trust and confidence in election results.”

GBA’s call comes in the wake of pressures from pro-opposition group, Let My Vote Count Alliance and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the EC to compile a new voters registers over claims that the current one is bloated.

They argue that about 76,286 foreigners are on the nation’s voters register hence their demand.
