President of football’s world governing body, FIFA is being interrogated by officials representing the Swiss Attorney General according to the BBC.<\/p>\n
The AG said in a statement that it had opened \u00a0“criminal proceedings” against the FIFA boss.<\/p>\n
The statement added that the 79-year-old, who announced his intention to step down from his position days after being re-elected was being investigated\u00a0“on suspicion of criminal mismanagement as well as – alternatively – on suspicion of misappropriation”<\/p>\n
Blatter is being questioned over a TV rights deal signed with the former head of the Caribbean Football Union Jack Warner a decade ago.<\/p>\n
He is also being investigated on suspicion of a “disloyal payment”two million Swiss francs ($2m; \u00a31.3m) \u00a0in 2011 to current UEFA president Michel Platini, who has announced his intention to contest for FIFA’s presidency.<\/p>\n
The Swiss authorities allege that the payment was made\u00a0“at the expense of Fifa, which was allegedly made for work performed between January 1999 and June 2002”.<\/p>\n
Seven people were arrested in the week leading up to the FIFA election by Swiss authorities while seven others were indicted.<\/p>\n
A press conference was cancelled earlier today, a few minutes before it was scheduled to begin.<\/p>\n
Last week FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke was suspended following allegations regarding ticket sales at the 2014 World Cup, claims he has denied.<\/p>\n
