The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo says President John Mahama’s directive to the Police for investigations into the violence that occurred during the Let My Vote Count Alliance demonstration will not yield positive results.

He is rather advocating for an independent commission of enquiry into the ordeal suffered by the demonstrators who were protesting to demand a new voters register over alleged discrepancies in the current one.

[contextly_sidebar id=”DWsikHR6AGZ1MMESSYENMXivGnu7mXB6″]President Mahama over the weekend charged the Police administration to probe the alleged violence visited on the protestors.

But speaking to NPP supporters in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale as part of his “Rise and Build” tour of the Region, Nana Addo indicated that an Independent Commission of Inquiry is what is needed to probe the attacks.

“The president of the Republic, John added his voice to the chorus of condemnation and told us that he has directed the Police command to institute and enquiry into what happened and make appropriate arrangement for their better conduct in the future. Respectfully, I want to disagree with the President of the Republic.”

He explained that after the incident, “the Police hierarchy were very quick to come out to defend their action” saying an internal enquiry is likely to lead to a cover up because “the hierarchy will find it very difficult to reverse itself.”

“An independent commission of inquiry is what is needed so that we can have an impartial, objective and a transparent enquiry which will make the appropriate recommendations that will enable us to have confidence that we have a Police service, a security unit that can police a free, open, democratic society.”

Nana Addo also used the opportunity to empathize with the young man who allegedly lost one of his eyes during the Police brutalities.
