President John Dramani Mahama has described as “terrible,” the attacks by the Police on some demonstrators last Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have held discussions with the police authorities and urged the command to review the unfortunate event of last Wednesday in line with policies and procedures that officers are expected to follow in response to incidents of this sort. The basic rights of all citizens must be recognized and respected at all times,\u201d said the President.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”zY4jY6XyfEYcIJ8cTZOzfZq70g6u1ckV”]The demonstration which was aimed at mounting\u00a0 pressure\u00a0 on the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters’ register turned violent after some protesters attempted to divert from agreed routes.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a grand durbar of chiefs and people of the Asogli Traditional area in Ho, during the yam festival, the President said the brutalities should have been avoided.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a terrible situation and one that should absolutely not have happened. Ghana is a nation of laws and a nation that respects the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n
The President’s call for a probe into the incident comes days after the 2016 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate made similar calls.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the pro-opposition groups who were involved in the demonstration have served notice that they will embark on another demonstration to present their petition to the Electoral Commission (EC).<\/p>\n
