The 2016 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo is calling for a presidential probe into a recent attack on pro-opposition groups who demonstrated over the voters register.<\/p>\n
The Police fired tear gas at some protesters after they reportedly veered off the proposed routes while others were also flogged for allegedly violating rules regarding the demonstration.<\/p>\n
Pictures and videos of what some have described as police brutality against unarmed demonstrators have angered many Ghanaians.<\/p>\n
Some have called investigations into the actions of the Police.<\/p>\n
Speaking during his tour in the Upper East region, Nana Addo, who was convinced the demonstrators followed the laid down procedures asked the president to investigate events leading to the attack.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe in the President of the Republic is in duty to establish a commission of enquiry to go into events of yesterday to see how come the Police behaved the way that they did,\u201d Nana Addo requested.<\/p>\n
\u201cAttacks by the Police against unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional rights should be a thing of the past and we want the world to know that no amount of intimidation is going to stop those of us who are asking for a new register to go about our peaceful advocacy for a new register,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The three time presidential candidate clarified that the NPP\u2019s call for a new voters register is not to promote the party\u2019s interest but to \u201cstrengthen the credibility of Ghana\u2019s electoral system and consolidate the democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are determined to continue down the path of democratic engagement and an open society.\u201d<\/p>\n
The demonstration was to push the demand for a new voters register after the NPP alleged that the old one is bloated.
