The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is asking the Police to investigate and bring to book its personnel that unleashed mayhem on pro-opposition groups who were demonstrating over the voters register.

A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong called on the hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service to expressly look into the matter “with all the seriousness that it deserves and ensure that those officers who perpetrated this act are brought to book, in order to avert such occurrence in the future.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”hq25V1X0jla5fvREJWGIp5mpZdIeeZCS”]The statement also condemned the methods used by the Police to disperse the protestors.

Members of the Let My Vote Count Alliance were demonstrating to push for their demand for a new register and were to present a petition to the Electoral Commission.

However the protest turned chaotic when some of their members reportedly veered off the approved route.

The Police used rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas on the protestors after efforts to compel them to adhere to the approved routes failed.

“The NPP unreservedly condemns all acts of excessive force by the Ghana Police Service as witnessed during the peaceful march organized by the LMVC, AFAG and MFC to advocate for the compilation of a new voters register as the integrity of the old one has been called to question,” the statement said.

The NPP added that the incident caused severe physical injuries to several participants and lamented that the action by the Police was “uncalled for and extremely unfortunate. It cast a doubt on our pride as a truly democratic nation and a beacon of hope within the sub-region.”
