{"id":151786,"date":"2015-09-15T14:37:22","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T14:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=151786"},"modified":"2015-09-17T11:56:46","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T11:56:46","slug":"banker-rejects-ghc120000-bribe-to-abandon-parliamentary-ambition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/09\/banker-rejects-ghc120000-bribe-to-abandon-parliamentary-ambition\/","title":{"rendered":"Banker rejects Ghc120,000 bribe to abandon parliamentary ambition\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A 31-year-old banker in the Volta Region, Narayana Osei Nyarko, has told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> he rejected Ghc120, 000 meant to persuade him to abandon his parliamentary ambitions in\u00a0the upcoming <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/09\/11\/ashanti-regions-response-to-ndc-primaries-impressive-gen-mosquito\/\" target=\"_blank\">primaries<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of the \u00a0National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was mad rush for nominations forms when nominations were opened by the NDC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over 600 people across the country filing their nomination forms to contest for the chamber that takes only 275 members.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Political watchers\u00a0say the rush by many including those who are gainfully employed by government to get into the legislature, is merely for job security rather than a genuine desire to make any meaningful contribution to the work of the house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;wJ6C1iOZzNUUsQ5Nhe8V48mCR3tzFkfQ&#8221;]While some incumbent MPs who are seeking re-election are using every means possible to get their competitors disqualified; others who are not ready for any competition are poised to resort to inducement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to Citi News, the banker said he has been under pressure to accept the bribe\u00a0to abandon his parliamentary ambition for the benefit of others in the\u00a0Nkwanta south constituency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an interview with <strong>Citi News\u2019<\/strong> Volta Regional Correspondent, Gratham Mackintosh, the aspirant said his Hindu \u00a0prevented him from accepting the bribe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTwo different figures came up; the first camp came with Ghc50, 000 and the other camp came with Ghc 70,000. The first camp which came with Ghc 50,000 didn\u2019t come again because I rejected their offer. \u00a0But the second camp was quite strong because they came with Ghc40, 000 and then later increased it to Ghc50, 000 and finally pegged it at Ghc70, 000 but I said no because I will feel okay to go to the battle and lose rather than taking money and withdrawing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the aspirant did not \u00a0mention the names of those who sought to influence him, he said the second camp used all manner of means including some members of his family to convince\u00a0him to drop out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt will be very suicidal for me to take it as a Hindu and a believer of Karma as the law of cause and effects state. Whatever I do today will come chasing me tomorrow. If I take the money and withdraw today, it will affect another young person who may rise up after me to contest some day tomorrow. As it stands now, I have a 63% chance of winning the primary based on my own research and the numbers from all the five zones within the constituency. And that\u2019s one of the reasons why I decided not to compromise.
