{"id":145608,"date":"2015-08-23T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2015-08-23T06:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=145608"},"modified":"2015-08-22T21:24:26","modified_gmt":"2015-08-22T21:24:26","slug":"new-voters-register-there-is-no-time-to-consider-proposals-budu-koomson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/08\/new-voters-register-there-is-no-time-to-consider-proposals-budu-koomson\/","title":{"rendered":"New voters&#8217; register: There is no time to consider proposals &#8211; Budu Koomson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Business Executive, Captain (Rtd) Budu Koomson has stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) has a limited time to consider proposals for a new voters\u2019 register in the build up to the 2016 general elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After\u00a0at an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Friday, the EC\u00a0asked the parties to consider the decision and submit their proposals by <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/21\/ec-task-parties-to-submit-proposals-for-new-voters-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">September 22<\/a><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think redoing it now, one and half years to the general elections&#8230; I don\u2019t know how long it will take the new EC chair to do this, let us hold this one and may be purge it if there are minors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;f3aDyywnfhUlsfseuCscQmoDNMOSGsA5&#8243;]The NPP together with other interested parties including the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP) are petitioning the Electoral Commission for a new voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The running mate of Nana Akuffo Addo, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia at a news conference\u00a0on Tuesday stated that their investigations had revealed that Ghana\u2019s voters register had the names of more than <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/18\/about-80000-togolese-are-in-ghanas-voters-register-bawumia\/\" target=\"_blank\">76,000 Togolese nationals<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission is expected to decide on the way forward subsequently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But speaking on <strong>The Big Issue<\/strong>, Capt. (Rtd) Budu Koomson blamed the developments on what he described as<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has also blamed instances of a bloated voters\u2019 register on what he described as the negative behaviour of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhere is the guarantee that if we start a new register now, we won\u2019t steal, lie or do the wrong things&#8230; where is the guarantee? I wonder how much\u00a0 money we spend, we always say we don\u2019t have money and cyclically, every four years, I don\u2019t know how much it costs us,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has already stated it&#8217;s stance on the matter, describing Dr Bawumia&#8217;s evidence as one that comes from <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/19\/npps-togolese-voters-register-claims-from-space-mosquito\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;space.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the party\u00a0argued that the evidence provided by the NPP\u00a0was \u201cdeliberately manufactured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe document I saw which they are purporting to be extracts from the Togolese register, if you look at it closely, you will realise that whereas the faces they show on the Ghana register has the picture and name of the individual plus other details, in the case of Togo, they just put the picture there and then put some long serial number there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Pius Amihere Eduku\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business Executive, Captain (Rtd) Budu Koomson has stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) has a limited time to consider proposals for a new voters\u2019 register in the build up to the 2016 general elections.
