After massive protestations by some traders at the Kejetia Terminal and Central Market in Kumasi, work has started in earnest for the ultra modern market to finally become a reality.

A visit by Citi FM’s Kojo Akoto Boateng to the site showed that contractors have begun driving steel columns into the ground, as part of the sub-structure works.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut the sod some time this month to officially pave way for the project to proceed. The contractors have organized their plant and equipment and are doing the preparatory works to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

The Kejetia reconstruction project is being undertaken by the Brazilian construction firm, CONTRACTA Engenharia Limited.

Phase one of the project is made up of construction work at the Kejetia Lorry Park in a period of 24 months, while the second and third phases would focus on the redevelopment of the Central Market.

The central market currently has about 12,000 stores. The redevelopment of the Central Market will provide 45,000 stores.

A Kumasi Human Rights Court dismissed an injunction filed by the Petty Traders Association of Kejetia to stop the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly from undertaking the project.

The traders prayed the court to place an injunction on the KMA and its Chief Executive Kojo Bonsu from continuing with the demolition exercise meant to pave way for the commencement of the redevelopment of the Kumasi Kejetia Terminal.

With the court case out of the way, the project execution is proceeding with plant, equipment and personnel in situ to construct the market, which is said to be the first in the West African sub-region.

The project is expected to cost government about $298 million.

The pavements and shoulders of the road in front of the Kejetia terminal have been taken over by petty traders following their eviction for the reconstruction of the Kejetia Terminal and Central Market reconstruction project.

They have been relocated to ply their trade in three separate markets located in the metropolis to facilitate the commencement of the $298 million project.

The traders who claim the three markets – Afia Kobi and Sofoline; the Race Course and Akyeamfuor are fully occupied say they are left with no option but to settle on the pavements and on the shoulders of the road. At Kejetia and all adjoining avenues – the Afia Kobi Ampem Avenue, Osei Tutu I Avenue, Okomfo Anokye Road through to the Opoku Ware II Avenue, are congested.

Some commercial drivers who have refused to join their counterparts at areas designated for their relocation are also picking up passengers along the roads; a situation which is creating heavy vehicular traffic in the city.

At the Adehyeman gardens area, shops are being constructed to accommodate displaced traders. Some transport owners have created new stations within the new shopping complexes to keep business going.

Over five shopping complexes are at different stages of completion. However, traders claim the cost of securing the new shop is beyond their means, keeping them on the streets.
