Professor Kwesi Yankah, President of the Central University College has predicted that the number of graduate unemployed would likely surge to 271,000 this year up from the existing figure of 200,000.<\/p>\n

The grim unemployment situation, he noted, was becoming deep-rooted with even final year students seeking internships returning home empty handed, as industries and work places remained choked.<\/p>\n
Professor Yankah, made the prediction during the 11th congregation of the Ghana Technology University on Saturday, where 240 scholars graduated with various postgraduate degrees.<\/p>\n
\u201cGhana is sitting on a time bomb with its worsening unemployment situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also said Ghana\u2019s private sector, which is touted as the engine of growth, was under siege, rocked by astronomically high interest rates, and unfriendly macro-economic climate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe painful truth on the ground is the existence today of an ailing economy that is not expanding fast enough to accommodate the unemployed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet industry and academia improve their dialogue, let\u2019s streamline the academic curriculum; let\u2019s infuse academic work with more practitioners and let even create more internship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said private universities were suffering from dwindling admissions and high students\u2019 attrition due to financial problems arising from the ailing economy.<\/p>\n
In spite of considerable setbacks in funding, he said, private universities have been noted for being more innovative in course offering and curriculum, and indulge in significant academic adventure where public universities have been more conservative.<\/p>\n
Dr Osei Darkwa, President of Ghana Technology University also expressed concern over the country\u2019s mounting unemployment situation and demanded the academia to review their curricula and forge stronger collaborations with industry players to quell the menace.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation calls for academic institutions to relook their curricular and establish stronger networks with industry in order to deliver relevant programmes to make graduates employable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
