The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) will hold an extraordinary general meeting today [Friday], to review the current strike and road map to the planned mass resignation of their members from the public sector.

[contextly_sidebar id=”w2z1LY3BgnxETw4LEHbUU0UZ0O2Vn9Fc”]The GMA has been on strike for more than two weeks demanding an agreed condition of service document, which has never existed since the Ghana Health Service was established in 1996.

Speaking to the media in Accra on Thursday, Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson stated that though they will consider the calls from various quarters for them to call-off their strike, the final decision still lies with the general assembly.

He said such decision “will be the prerogative of the members of the association, they will be the ones attending the general assembly meeting and whatever they say binds all of us. After the general assembly had deliberated, whatever decision they come up with I’m sure the people of Ghana will know. I cannot preempt whatever they will decide, I can’t tell, I don’t think for everybody. Being a leader doesn’t mean that you will impose your will on your members. These are professionals, highly skilled and well-educated people.”

Government had described the GMA’s strike as “illegal” because per the labour law, while negotiations are ongoing, aggrieved workers are not supposed to be on strike.

President John Mahama had also reiterated that he will not to succumb to pressures by the GMA adding that his government will not release allowances that have not been budgeted for.
