The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has suspended its one week old strike.

This follows assurance from government that their books and research allowances will soon be paid.

[contextly_sidebar id=”K9hglZ9BfajuoaeCLRf4Vbts7xzpnReW”]The group embarked on strike last Thursday over what they described as delays in the payment of their book and research allowances.

citifmonline.com understands that UTAG announced the decision at an emergency meeting held on Thursday.

The Ministry of Education had earlier announced that it has received the all clear from the Finance Ministry on payment of book and research allowance for the university teachers.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Francis Gbadago speaking to Citi News called on UTAG to call off the strike, because the allowance will hit their accounts soon.

“The Ministry of Education has received approval from the Ministry of Finance that the book and research allowance for the 2014/2015 academic year has been approved and so we have equally received the exchange rate from the Ministry of Finance,” he said.

Francis Gbadago added that the ministry had relayed the necessary documents regarding the payment to the National Council for tertiary education “and they are going to communicate this this to the tertiary institutions to submit their claims for payment by the Ministry of Finance.”

“What it means is that we have gone quite far, we have made significant progress in this particular regard and the Ministry of Education is calling on UTAG to call off the strike,” he added.
